Episode 5 - Fear Factoring

Ron Jones

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

Ron talks about going to see Friday the 13th with his girlfriend, getting scared during the movie, and leaving the theater. Fear is everywhere; it is loud, it is manipulative, it is controlling, and it is contagious. We are usually pretty good at seeing (and judging) other people's fears, while minimizing our own. But how much fear should we allow in our lives? If we take the Holy Spirit's words seriously, Christians should be able to live fearlessly. He says perfect love casts out fear, and that in Christ, we are perfectly loved. We are trying to live in an unbroken relationship with the Holy Spirit, aware of his voice and his presence all the time. Eliminating the voice of fear is very helpful because it makes room to hear our best friend. Fear is a weapon of the enemy, perhaps it is his primary weapon since he has no real authority and only gains access to our lives as we choose to pay attention to him. Fear and worship are closely related; they both involve focus. This is why the Holy Spirit tells us to fear God. If we focus on God (fear God), we lose sight of all the other things vying for our attention.

Questions

- Do you feed your fears?

- Where in your life are you motivated by fear?

- Can a relationship with the Holy Spirit extinguish fear?

- Are there times we should be afraid? When?

Extras

By the way, I got the Friday the 13th scene wrong...it wasn't a girl who got killed from under the bed, it was a guy, Kevin Bacon! And evidently, I wasn't the only one freaked out by the scene. Here's an article about it.

A video of my great awesome truck.
