OUR Best Friend

"I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

- Jesus Christ

There was a time in church history when the coming of the gift Jesus promised was celebrated with greater joy than either Christmas or Easter.  Pentecost, also known as Whitsun (White Sunday) was the day to recognize the coming of the Spirit of God, not to live within a temple made of stone, but to live inside individual people.  When we speak about our "Best Friend" we mean this Spirit, also known as:
-the Holy Spirit
-the Spirit of Christ
-the Spirit of God
-the Holy Ghost
There are more names given for him, but the most important thing to grasp from the start is that he is a "he," and not an "it."  The Holy Spirit is a person.  He is not a force, or a feeling, or an essence.  He is a person, and , as a person, he can be known.  He has a voice.  He has a will.  He has a personality.  What is he like?  It isn't a simple thing to describe a person.  Think about someone you know and imagine trying to describe them to someone else.  You could start with simple things like their physical characteristics, but none of that would describe them adequately.  We need more substance in order to know people.  Members of the same family have very different experiences of the same people; mother, father, sister, brother.  Each person to person relationship is a unique thing. The Holy Spirit is a real person - the Most Real Person.  Each of us will experience him a little differently.  We have some hints at how to get going.  He is the Spirit of Jesus, and so we can read the gospels of the New Testament and see what kind of person Jesus is.  The Holy Spirit will always reflect Jesus.  There is another place in the New Testament often called the "fruit of the Spirit."  It is actually the description of the Holy Spirit's personality.  Here is the person who wants to be your best friend:

He is loving.
He is joyful.
He is peaceful.
He is kind.
He is good.
He is faithful.
He is gentle.
He is self-controlled.

He is all of this and more AND he is willing to share all of these traits with us without limit.  Imagine going into a situation that causes you to become anxious.  Now imagine going there with a friend so full of peace that his peace fills you more full than the situation can drain you! The Holy Spirit is the best Best Friend we could ever ask for.  We believe that meeting him and becoming his friend changes everything.  We believe the more people who know him the more our world will change into a better place.  Actually we believe more than this; we believe that knowing him is the way we become the people we were created to be, and when more and more of us become ourselves the world will become the place it was designed to be.  What if one family became a Holy Spirit filled family where our friend became their best friend?  A neighborhood?  A workplace?  A team?  A city?  A nation?  It starts with just one of us.  All relationships do.  He wants to be your best friend.  We want to help you get to know him - not that we think we know everything there is to know about him.  In fact, we need you to help us get to know him better.  Undoubtedly, you'll get to know him in ways we haven't yet.  So let's help each other become best friends with The Best Friend.
